Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, along Minister of Education Nicolás Eyzaguirre, signed into law legislation for the creation of a new Subsecretary Department and new National Intendence for Early Childhood Education. The measure aims to establish new specialized organisms that work to ensure better access and equity to the early childhood educational system.

Minister Eyzaguirre affirmed this is positive news, given early childhood education had been left behind in several aspects. Coverage, for example, only borders 15% of the population, while primary and secondary education reach nearly a 100%, which means that the sector does not provide enough space, enough prepared professionals, or satisfactory conditions for the exercise of the activity. Hence, these departments constitute a direct attempt to redeem and implement new strategies for the development and monitoring of education within the cycle of 0-6 years of age.

The creation of these institutions renders a great advancement towards a better positioning of the national issues regarding early childhood education, which President Bachelet considered “fundamental for the formation of women and men”.
